Preservatives:
Certain cold drinks and fruit juices contain benzoiac acid,
which may cause adverse reactions.
Colouring:
Colouring that is added to vitamin drops and some foodstuffs,
can cause allergic symptoms.
Gluten:
Coeliac disease or gluten intolerance, results when a child is
allergic to the binding agent, which is found in wheat, oats,
barley and rye. These children will be underweight and small
with a protruding stomach and small buttocks. A permanent
gluten-free diet will have to be considered.
Wheat
Introduce cereals containing wheat with care, as many children
are found to experience temporary allergic reactions, which in
time does seem to pass.
Albumen
Egg white has a very high protein content, which some children
have difficulty in digesting. It is a good idea to abstain from
it completely in the first year, and should never be given to a
child under six months of age. Children suffering from a related
allergy, may experience swelling of the face and generalised
urticaria.
Fruit juice
Orange juice and those with a high acid content may cause
diarrhoea and a rash which forms around the anus and mouth.
Fish and chocolate
Children who are allergic to chocolate and occasionally fish,
may have symptoms of hay fever, cramps, diarrhoea and certain
skin rashes.
