Allergies

An allergy is an immunological response by the body to certain substances, whether it be inhaled, touched or eaten. The tendency to develop allergies, does seem to be hereditary, although family members may not be allergic to the same allergen. If one parent is allergic the likelihood of a child being allergic is 40%; if both parents are affected the child's chances of developing the symptoms rise to between 70 - 80%.

It is believed that one person in every six has some form of an allergy, and there are others that may disagree, in saying that this figure is far too high. One reason for their argument is the difficulty in being able to differentiate between a true allergy, sensitivity or intolerance.
Unlike a true allergy, a sensitivity depends entirely on how much of the substance you are exposed to. For example, almost everyone is sensitive to the chlorine found in swimming pool water and while some can endure it without any ill-effects there are those who's eyes become red and painful after just a few minutes of swimming.
An intolerance is entirely different again, in that a certain brand of chocolate may make you ill, whereas other chocolates will have absolutely no effect. This does not mean you are allergic to chocolate in general, but simply are intolerant to the offending type.

When introducing solids in this case, it is wise to serve only one new food over a period of about three days, which will help you to immediately identify any allergies that may manifest themselves. If your child does show any adverse reactions, it is best to consult your doctor, who will advise you on whether the reaction is actually an allergic one, and what course of action should be taken.
