A shortage of the red pigment in the blood (Haemoglobin).
Haemoglobin transports oxygen.
Menstruation and stomach ulcers
contribute to loss of iron when loss of blood is excessive.
Anaemia symptoms include:
- fatigue
- dizziness
- breathlessness
- lack of concentration
- pallor
- white eye linings
- recurrent colds and infections and palpitations
Anaemia seems to mainly affect women.
Iron deficiency in children can contribute to mental and physical
retardation and certain behavioural problems.
Iron may be lacking in diet, or not being absorbed properly via the
small intestine.
LIFESTYLE ATTENTION
- Concentrate on including foods containing good quantities of
iron that are
readily absorbable. The classic list is:
Beef, pork, lamb, kidneys, liver, chicken, fish, cooked beans, dark
green veggies, sun dried fruits, soya beans, lettuce, watercress.
- Tea drunk before or immediately after meals reduces iron
absorption They are best taken a half-hour apart.
- Reduce intake of alcohol in cases of "Megaloblastic Anaemia".
HOMOEOPATHIC
- China - Anaemia due to blood loss or oversensitivity
- Ferrum - Pallor of face with easy flushing
HERBALS
- Dandelion decoction
- Liquorice and ginger in cooking
TISSUE SALTS
- Calc Phos - During first 2-3 years, particularly where
irritability is seen
