Managing Aches, Pains and Chronic Disease:
The Cause of All Disease
This article is Part I of 7 of the “Ultimate Wellness” Living
Lifestyle Journey series. Researched and written by Richard
Penfounde and the Naturally Healthy Lifestyles team, it focuses on
the main cause of ALL lifestyle aches, pains, degenerative diseases
and disease related premature deaths. The subsequent parts will be

A Chronically Diseased SocietyIts scary to think that eight out of ten of us will suffer from a
chronic, degenerative disease in our lifetime and die prematurely.
According to the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) in the US, they
claim that 80% of all “seniors” in the USA have at least one chronic
disease and 50% have at least two. It also seems that most of the
others, who don’t have a chronic disease suffer from aches and
pains. The trends in the UK look pretty similar.
Just so we all understand, this includes all of the killer diseases,
like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, obesity, etc.
Although “seniors” are the worst affected, don’t think that younger
people aren’t affected. More and more children and young people in
there 20’s and 30’s are suffering from lifestyle diseases like
cancer, heart disease, diabetes and of course obesity.
This definitely wasn’t the case fifty years ago. So what’s changed ?
The question is why and what is causing theses aches, pains and
chronic diseases ?
Modern LifestylesIn a nut shell, its all about the modern lifestyles we live, what we
eat and drink, and often what we don’t eat. (nutritious food).
Combine this with what we breathe and what we absorb through our
skin from the environmental pollution where we work and live, and
the stress we experience in our day to day lives, then its no wonder
we have become a generation of chronically diseased people.
In this article (Part 1) we are not going to cover all the details
of what makes a good or bad lifestyle (that will be covered later),
instead we are going to make you aware of what causes the aches,
pains and lifestyle diseases that have become so common, and help
you identify the “toxic killers”.
AcidosisOne of the main causes of aches, pains and disease is “Acidosis”. To
prevent disease we must focus on two critical areas – “toxicity and
inflammation”.
“ACIDOSIS” is the increased acidity of the blood causing a pH
imbalance caused by what we eat and drink and the polluted
environment we live in, resulting in toxic poisoning of the bodies
tissues and cells, and internal inflammation.
This is the primary cause of ALL modern lifestyle diseases today and
is preventable.
Its quite likely that you have never heard of “acidosis” or
“toxicosis” and its even more likely that your doctor doesn’t
understand it unless he is a “natural health” practitioner.
So if you are serious about your health and wellness, now is the
time to take control of your own health and wellness by becoming
fully informed of the realities of disease and premature death. This
could save you and your family a lot of pain and heartache.
Cells – The marvel of creationEach of our bodies started with one single cell and developed into a
human being - a marvel of creation. An adult body has between 75 and
100 trillion cells that make up every fluid, tissue, gland, muscle,
bone, organ and the 11 integrated systems of a human being.
Every life process takes place in the cells. Life starts in the
cells and life ends in the cells, regardless of the disease.
Bio-energyOur health relies on these trillions of cells repeatedly performing
billions of specialized functions primarily activated by the miracle
of enzymes.
Every cell is phenomenally complex and has a specific function to
carry out in the body. Each cell has an independent “power plant” to
generate the energy necessary to carry out its own functions.
To produce this energy, the cells must be fed the right “groceries”
(nutrients) to maintain the very delicate mineral balance necessary
to fuel the cell pumps that generate the cellular electricity.
In addition the cells must also be able to process and excrete the
toxic waste resulting from “acidosis” and the processing of the
“groceries.”
Each cell is tightly bound by a blood vessel and a lymphatic vessel
with space between the cells being maintained in what Dr Samuel
West, DN, ND, Chemist and Lymphologist called the Healthy “Dry
State”, in his research into the “cause of disease.”
Dr West’s extensive research over 30 years established that life and
death is controlled by the blood stream. In layman’s terms, blood
brings oxygen and nutrients to the cells to enable them to function
effectively. However, because of our modern lifestyles, blood
proteins and toxins become trapped around the cells, blocking the
circulation and upsetting the chemical balance in the cells, which
produces the conditions that cause loss of energy, aches, pains,
disease and finally death.
He calls this the Diseased “Swamp State”, which is
explained in detail in his book The Golden Seven
Plus One.
The Critical Elements Life, disease and death are governed by four critical elements: air
(oxygen), water, macronutrients (proteins, fats carbohydrates,
glucose) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, amino acids,
enzymes and trace elements).
It is said that you can survive for 3 weeks without food, 3 days
without water but only 3 minutes without oxygen.
The reason being that oxygen and glucose are absolutely essential to
generate the cell energy to enable it to process the nutrients to
achieve all body functions. Without oxygen or the necessary
nutrients, cells will stop functioning and affect the associated
organ, resulting in disease and death.
The Healthy “Dry State”In the healthy “Dry State” the blood vessels feed the cells with
oxygen, glucose, water, macronutrients and micronutrients, including
vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, enzymes and
trace elements, to keep the cells performing at peak levels.
The lymphatic vessels extract the normal waste and toxins resulting
from the cell processes and recycle it into the blood stream to be
cleansed by the Kidney’s and the Liver and excreted from the body.
While this process is working normally, it keeps the body free of
aches pains and lifestyle diseases.
It is important to note that unlike the bloods circulatory system
that has the “heart” to pump the blood around the
“96,600-kilometer-long” pipeline of arteries, veins and capillaries,
the lymphatic system doesn’t, and relies on muscle expansion and
contraction to move the lymph through its one way system back
through the Thoracic duct into the blood stream.
This is mainly achieved by two critical key activities. Proper
Breathing and specific Exercise. (More on these in Part 6 of this
series)
The Digestive System The gastro-intestinal tract is the key to optimum health.
It is important to understand that the digestive system is the
vehicle that processes and delivers what we eat and drink to the
blood stream through the intestinal walls, once it has been
digested. The blood stream then delivers the life sustaining
“groceries” from the food to every cell in the body.
If, however, we eat and drink modern lifestyle meals including, fast
foods, processed foods, refined carbohydrates, saturated fats,
excessive sugar, alcohol, fizzy cold drinks, coffee, etc, then the
blood delivers “toxic waste” to the cells, resulting in “acidosis”,
the toxic poisoning of the bodies cells.
This excess toxic waste slowly, over time, overloads the extraction
capability of the kidneys, liver and the Lymphatic System, creating
the Diseased “Swamp State” around the cells which, depending on the
severity, results in loss of energy, aches, pains, chronic disease
and eventually premature death. This slow build up is the reason why
so many “seniors” have chronic diseases.
pH BalanceTo fully understand the impact on the body, of “what we eat and
drink”, we need to be aware of another amazing feature of the human
body.
Acid-alkaline pH balance.The acid-alkaline balance of the body has an enormous impact on a
person’s health and is very seldom consciously managed or even taken
into consideration, even by conventional health practitioners.
We have seen that healthy cells are critical to enable the body to
perform at maximum efficiency and to remain in a healthy state. We
have also seen that cells require oxygen and the right “groceries”
to perform optimally. Unfortunately most of what we eat these days
is highly acidic and toxic, which if allowed to poison the cells or
if not extracted from around the cells, causes the cells to
malfunction and die.
So how does the pH of the body’s fluids affect the cells and the
overall health of the body ?
The pH balance of our bodies fluids, blood, saliva, urine and the
fluids in and between the bodies cells are absolutely critical to
our health and wellbeing. For optimum health, wellness and longevity
the body must be in a slightly alkaline state.
Bear in mind that water makes up a large percentage of the body, on
average, 55% for women and 60% for men. Its interesting to note that
a new born baby has about 78% water.
What does a “slightly alkaline state” mean ?
pH (potential hydrogen) is a measure of the “acidity” or
“alkalinity” of a solution.
The pH scale is from 1 to 14 with 7 being neutral and 1 to 7 being
acidic (low on oxygen) and 7-14 being alkaline (high on oxygen).
Remember oxygen is critical to the well being of the cells.
In our case we are specifically interested in the pH of the blood,
which is extremely critical and should always be slightly alkaline
with an ideal pH measurement of 7.365 however most research refers
to ideal as being between 7.35 and 7.45. If the blood pH went below
6.8 or above 7.8 we would go into a coma and die.
There are however some parts of the body which have different pH
levels like the stomach fluids which needs to be acidic (2.5) to
perform its digestive functions.
Our saliva and our urine also have slightly different pH values and
are used to measure our overall body pH and the level of our overall
health and wellness.
Because the pH of the blood is so critical, the body will
continuously monitor it and “steal” minerals (electrolytes) from
other parts of the body to safely remove the acid from the body,
balance the pH and maintain the alkaline level at all times. The key
alkaline minerals include, calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium.
For instance, if the blood is becoming acidic, the body will steal
calcium, which is very alkaline (pH 10-12), from the bones to
maintain the critical optimum blood alkaline level, which over time
may result in osteoporosis, or other calcium deficient symptoms and
diseases.
It is interesting to note that research shows that there are over
200 diseases linked to Ionic Calcium Deficiency Disease (ICDD).
It is therefore essential to have excess alkaline stored in the body
at all times to assist with the buffering process.
The Acid GeneratorsNobel Laureate and discoverer of Vitamin C, Albert Szent-Győgyi,
once noted, “The body is alkaline by design, but acidic by
function.”
The bodies natural metabolic process produces vast quantities of
acid, however the bodies cells and tissues require a slightly
alkaline environment.
We have seen that “acidosis”, toxicity and inflammation are the
prime cause of lifestyle diseases, but where does all the acid come
from, and how can we maintain alkalinity ?
No surprise there – our modern day lifestyles are prolific “acid”
and toxin generators.
Most of the acid and toxins comes from what we eat and drink, but
also from what we absorb through the skin and breathe from polluted
air. Another source that is often overlooked is “stress” and
emotions, like anger, fear and jealousy, which, unfortunately
together with smoking and alcohol are also prolific internal
generators of acid and toxins.
By the way in contrast, meditation, prayer, peace, kindness and love
are alkaline forming.
So as they say in the Caribbean “Don’t Worry, Be HAPPY mon”.
Lets stop for a moment and look at what most of us eat and drink.
Virtually everything we put into our mouths other than raw
vegetables and fruit, which are lacking in most peoples diet, are
acidic forming. (Sometimes referred to as “acid yielding)
Let me first explain that the key word here is “forming”. Take a
lemon; in it’s normal state it is acidic, but once it has gone
through the digestive process in the body and is absorbed into the
blood stream, it is very alkaline. This is what is meant by acid or
alkaline “forming”.
It is recommended that we consume a diet of 80% alkaline forming and
20% acid forming foods while we are trying to correct “acidosis” and
heal the body, and 60% alkaline and 40% acid to normally maintain a
healthy acid free body.

Cancer ResearchContrary to current medical rhetoric and “modern medicines”
perverted claims, the cause of cancer is easy to understand and is
readily preventable and reversible without dangerous chemotherapy,
radiation or surgery.
Nobel Prize Winner Dr Otto Warburg, established in his research that
cancer lives in an “acidic” (low oxygen) environment like most
bacteria. Every time Otto Warburg lowered the oxygen level by 35% in
a healthy cell, it became cancerous.
Based on his work he found that cancer cells cannot survive in high
levels of oxygen (alkaline pH) and that increased amounts of oxygen
prevented the spread of cancer cells and will eventually cause them
to die.
Subsequently, Robert Barefoot established that at a pH slightly
above 7.4 cancer cells become dormant and at a pH of 8.5 cancer
cells will die.
This is covered in his book - The Calcium Factor: The Scientific
Secret of Health and Youth by Robert R. Barefoot, and Carl J M.D.
Reich.
Cesium Chloride Cesium Chloride, one of earth's most alkaline elements, has been
used to raise the pH of the body as an alternative or complementary
cancer treatment for many years. As mentioned above Dr. Otto
Warburg’s research showed that cancer thrives in anaerobic (without
oxygen) or acidic, conditions. Research by Keith Brewer, PhD and H.E.
Sartori has shown that raising the pH, or oxygen content of a cancer
cell, to 8.0 creates a deadly environment within and they soon die
and are disposed of by the body. Today cesium chloride is typically
used in combination with potassium to treat cancer. However you
should fully understand that although all of these alternative
therapies are scientifically proven and have excellent success
rates, they are outlawed by most governments that are controlled by
“modern medicine” agencies and the Pharmaceutical Industry as these
therapies threaten their chemotherapy interests and profits.
Remember the “cancer business” is a billion dollar a year business.
In Holland the alkaline boosting vegetarian diet promoted by Dr.
Moerman, has been recognized by the government as a legitimate
treatment for cancer. Results indicate that Dr. Moerman’s diet is
more effective than standard toxic cancer treatments like
chemotherapy and radiation and definitely doesn’t have the horrific
side effects of these toxic treatments.
Alkalize or DieAs you have seen, “ACIDOSIS” is the prime cause of all disease. It
is important for you to fully understand the process of alkalizing
your body and the critical role a properly alkalized body plays in
restoring and maintaining your overall health. Everything in our
bodies, from cells to organs only function properly in exact
proportion to the amount of alkaline and acid levels in our system.
Dr Theodore A. Baroody makes the following point in his remarkable
book – “Alkalize or Die”.
“The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does
matter is that they all come from the same root cause……. Too much
tissue acid waste in the body !”.
Reverse AgingIn Part 6 of this series - “Managing Prevention”, we will cover
various “alkalizing” options of which “alkaline water” is one of the
most effective choices.
Sang Whang, the author of “Reverse Aging”, an exceptional book
covering a topic that is close to most peoples heart, provides
convincing information about why alkaline water is the best water
for human consumption, but more importantly he explains how alkaline
water is an excellent source for flushing acidic waste, oxygenating,
detoxifying, hydrating, alkalizing your body and achieving optimum
health. He describes why reverse osmosis and distilled water are not
your best choices for water filtration.
This is what he had to say about lifestyle degenerative diseases in
his book.
“In general, degenerative diseases are the result of acid waste
buildups within us. When we are born, we have the highest alkaline
mineral concentration and also the highest body pH. From that point
on, the normal process of life is to gradually acidify. That is why
these degenerative diseases do not occur when you are young.”
The Main CulpritsAlthough we will cover the serious toxic affects Personal Care,
Cosmetic and household cleaning products have on the body in a later
article, the main “acid” culprits, unfortunately are commonly found
in most of our daily diets. These incorporate a number of products
from the grocery shop, including breakfast cereals, margarine,
bacon, red meats, canned fruits, pasta, fizzy cold drinks, diet
drinks, sugar laden sweets, cakes and biscuits, coffee and
artificial sweeteners. Then add to these, fast foods, processed
foods, refined carbohydrates, trans fatty acids, hydrogenated oils
(silent killers) and alcohol, all of which are acid forming, you can
see just how “acidic” and “toxic” our diets are.
Lets look at an example of one of the worst “acid forming” culprits
– “fizzy cold drinks”. On average a soft drink cola has a pH of 2.5.
This means it is very acidic and would need 32 glasses of water
(neutral pH -7) to counter act the acid forming affect on the body.
In addition each can of cola has an average equivalent of 13
teaspoons of sugar, and most diet drinks contain aspartame, a highly
toxic substance. You can see that this is a toxic disaster and a
certain precursor to obesity, diabetes, ADHD and a number of other
chronic diseases.
Its no wonder that when these drinks are combined with fatty fast
foods and sugar laden goodies, more and more children, teenagers and
young people in their 20’s and 30’s are suffering from disorders and
chronic disease at a younger age.
The Toxic Revolution The cancer rate 100 years ago was one in 8,000. Today, it is one out
of every two persons. This correlates directly with the increase in
the use of toxic chemicals.
It is not only cancer that is caused by toxicity. There are hundreds
of problems related to toxicity such as migraine headaches, fatigue,
allergies, asthma, ADHD or ADD, learning disabilities, heart
disease, arthritis, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s, lack of brain
function such as clarity of thinking, confusion, forgetfulness,
inability to concentrate, and the list goes on and on.
The BIG Question ?
We should all ask ourselves – “are we unknowingly, or worse still,
knowingly poisoning ourselves and our children with acid, poisonous
toxins and dangerous chemicals ?”.
The Answer !
It is Time to Take Control of Your Own Health and Wellbeing.
No one Else Cares !
First and foremost, become informed to enable you to take every
possible action to limit your exposure, and that of your family, to
excessive acid foods, poisonous toxins and dangerous chemicals.
This is the focus and the main goal of the following parts of this
article.
We hope that this information will help you become more aware of the
dangers of “acidosis” and prompt you to become fully informed to
enable you and your family to limit your exposure and enable you to
enjoy a long, healthy, happy, vibrant and active life.

introduce you to three new “toxic enemies” that you and your
children most probably use every day of your life, unaware of the
dangerous consequences.
We explain how a slow build up of poisonous toxins and dangerous

that 287 chemicals were detected in the umbilical cord blood of new
