Common Breast Disorders
Benign Mammary Dysplasia
Also known as cyclical mastalgia, this condition usually affects
both breasts, causing them to feel heavy, swollen and tender for
several days before each period. Breast pain is probably the most
common condition of all, experienced by approximately two out of
three women. Symptoms may be more severe in the second half of the
menstrual cycle, but in some women they may go away following a
period.
Benign mammary dysplasia is more common in women with irregular
periods and those who have no children. It is thought to be related
to fluctuating hormones, particularly a high level of oestrogen.
There may be a couple of small cysts or just one or two large ones,
most often affecting the upper, outer parts of the breast. Although
there is no definite association with cancer, women suffering with
this condition are urged to have regular check-ups, as it is
necessary to establish that this condition is not masking early
breast cancer.
Self-help tips for easing breast pain
- Removal or other treatment is often unnecessary, as it will
resolve itself in time.
- Ensure that you have a well-fitting, comfortable and
supportive bra.
- Reduce your fat intake.
- Cut down on caffeine (tea, coffee, chocolate).
- The combined oral contraceptive pill can both prevent and
relieve symptoms by balancing hormone levels.
- Vitamin B6, vitamin E and oil of evening primrose have all
proved effective for some women.
Stop smoking if you are a smoker.
