Breast Cancer
After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer
found in European and North American women. Cancer of the breast is treacherous because it tends to spread
rapidly to distant parts of the body. When detected in its earliest
stages the treatment by surgery and irradiation is quite successful,
however, once colonies of cancer cells have migrated to other parts
of the body, the outlook is almost always grave.
Headway, due mostly to early detection and treatment, has been made
in recent years in reducing the number of deaths from breast cancer.
Women are becoming more aware of the possible tragic outcome of
'breast lumps', with early reporting of this finding, awarding them
the benefits of early treatment. Breast lumps may have a tendency to
develop quite rapidly between yearly check-ups. So it is now
advocated that women learn self-examination techniques, to be
practiced on a monthly basis - in addition to the yearly
examination.
