Common Breast Disorders
Most women will experience some form of breast problem at some
time in their lives. Fluctuations in hormone levels, associated
with the menstrual cycle or with the rise and decline of
fertility over the years, is in most cases responsible for these
problems.
The most common disorders are mastalgia (painful breasts) and
fibrocystic disease (lumpy breasts). Discovering a lump in the
breast is a dreaded event which provokes thoughts of pain,
mutilation and death. Yet, the vast majority of breast lumps are
benign, requiring only simple procedures to remedy the problem.
Women can reduce the risk of some of these problems by examining
their breasts on a regular basis, and by following a healthy
lifestyle, with a few extra measures added specifically to aid
breast care.
