Common Breast Disorders
Duct Papillomas
These little wart-like swellings grow in the milk-producing
(lactiferous) ducts below the nipple. The first symptom is usually a
yellowish or blood-stained discharge from the nipple. Their cause is
unknown, and can occur at any age - more commonly though, before the
menopause. Removal is necessary, as there is a slight tendency
towards malignancy.
Treatment
A minor surgical procedure, performed under general anaesthetic,
whereby a small incision is made to the side of the nipple, and the
duct(s) containing the papillomas removed. Discomfort is minimal,
and would only require a short hospital stay. It is advisable that
you wear a soft supporting bra for comfort during the healing
process. Stitches will be removed within a week and the scar will
fade over time.
