COELIAC DISEASE
(Non Tropical Sprue)
Most often found in children. The small intestine, due to gluten
sensitivity, is unable to allow nutrients to be absorbed into the
bloodstream. Gluten is a protein normally found in wheat products, including rye,
barley, oats.
Symptoms include diarrhoea, failure to grow and put on proper
weight, bloated stomach, fatigue and inability to concentrate,
listen or learn. In adults symptoms of depression, mood swings, fatigue,
infertility,
constipation and weepy skin disorders are common.
Stools are almost always pale, foul smelling and greasy.
LIFESTYLE ATTENTION
- Avoid all foods containing gluten
and sugars.
- Avoid wheat and barley supplements
- Breast feed whenever possible to at least 4 months.
- Limit infant cereal intake to rice and millet.
- Avoid any infant wheat product introduction for at least the first
year
- Check to see if milk or other foods are adding to the total
allergy picture (get professional tests done).
- Then eliminate these from the daily diet until medical practitioner
gives "go ahead" for testing re-introduction.
- Be careful with buckwheat, maize and millet as they contain prolamines
which behave in a similar fashion to the alpha-gliadin in wheat.

essential.
