Crawling
Anytime from six months onwards, your baby will make his first
attempts to venture out into the big wide world, by crawling or
pulling himself along on his stomach or bottom. Some babies start to
crawl at six months while others only master the act at around eight
months, so this skill shouldn't be compared to that of other babies,
as it is not something that must be accomplished by a certain age.
Before beginning to crawl a baby must learn how to sit, and when he
begins crawling after that, is of no concern, unless he is lacking
in other developmental areas. Babies that never take to crawling,
may walk sooner, while those that marvel at the act may start taking
their first steps much later, but unlike other areas of development,
crawling is not usually included on assessment scales.
Many mothers do not offer their baby's the chance to master
crawling, by keeping them confined to their cot or pram all day
long. Encourage crawling as much as possible, by offering plenty of
supervised floor-play time, but do not force the issue, as once he
is off on a mission to trouble, you will be left wondering why you
were in such a hurry!
