This condition results from a lifestyle imbalance where the body produces very little or no insulin. Insulin is the hormone needed to transform carbohydrates into energy. When this metabolic process falls short, sugar gets into the blood stream and accumulates there. Very much a condition associated with western culture and diet. Metabolism of fat and protein often imbalances and cumulatively increases the risk of arteriosclerosis, kidney disease and loss of nerve function.

Symptoms include:

  • Constant need to urinate
  • Thirst
  • Recurrent infections
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss

Insulin dependent diabetes (IDO) usually begins in childhood. Non-insulin dependent diabetes (NDD) begins later in life and can progress to insulin dependancy.
All treatments must be carried out in collaboration with your doctor.

LIFESTYLE ATTENTION (when non-insulin dependant)

  • 60-70% of diet to gear up to high plant fibre, complex carbohydrates, and include only unrefined foods.
  • Replace red meat with fish, chicken - free range if possible - or soya beans.
  • Plenty of greens, root vegetables and garlic.
  • Replace fat products cow's (milk) with goat's, ewe's or soya
  • Avoid all foods containing sugar - that includes breads containing sugar (very many do).
  • Avoid sweets, chocolates, commercial fruit juices, cokes and other sugared soft drinks, wines, etc.
  • Avoid (or lower) alcohol, coffee and tea.
  • Include 2-3 tablespoons of Brewers Yeast in daily diet, for its chromium (a blood sugar mineral for correcting imbalances). If you have a yeast intolerance don't.
  • Use olive or flaxseed oil as oil of choice for salads and light cooking. Do not fry or heat over J20°C.
  • Use organic sources of foods wherever they are available.
  • Drink filtered, boiled or distilled water
  • Always chew fruit and vegetable juices until the flavour has gone - helps digestion of carbohydrate sugars.
