Folic acid may
prevent Cancer
A new report claimed folic acid could prevent cancer
– and even halt its growth (HealthDay News, 12 June).
While folic acid is more commonly known as the nutrient
that can help prevent birth defects, new research
suggests that folic acid supplements may also help
prevent cancer of the larynx.
In a study of people with precancerous lesions called
leukoplakia, Italian researchers found the lesions
disappeared in 28% of participants, and 44% experienced
at least a partial shrinking of their lesions. All of
the study participants took 5mg of folic acid three
times a day for six months. Results of the study
appeared in the July 15 issue of the journal Cancer.
Nutrition experts believe this early discovery could be
vital in helping to understand how to prevent people at
risk of cancer from developing the disease. Simply
supplementing your diet with folic acid – either on its
own or as part of a multi-vitamin product such as
G&G's
Mega 2000 – can reduce the risk of
cancer immediately,
according to this latest research.
Folic acid is named after folate, which comes from
folium, Latin for leaf. Seventy years ago Dr Lucy Wills
found that folate (folic acid) prevented anaemia during
pregnancy. Experts used yeast extract to get folate, but
by the 1940s they had begun to extract it from spinach.
Scientists now know it is found in Brussels sprouts,
dried beans, oranges, bananas, nuts, fish, eggs and
Marmite. It is vital to forming new cells by creating
DNA and helps the body make homocysteine, to reduce the
risk of heart disease. Pregnant women take 4mg a day to
cut the risk of children being born with
spina bifida.
Folic Acid is available from G&G at £6.95 for 100
capsules, 1000mcg (Code G0619). Or take a good
multi-vitamin & mineral product such as
G&G's Mega 2000 to meet your daily requirement of
folic acid and all the other essential vitamins &
minerals!
