I'm not naughty .... Just on the road to Discovery
You've had a terrible day, car wouldn't start, got caught in the
rain trying to find a phone to call for assistance, forgot to buy
disposable’s and to top it all off your head feels like the remains
of a train smash. You arrive home, battle through the evenings
chores then only to discover that your little one has absolutely no
intention of going to sleep.
And it is exactly at this point that you discover what type of
mother you really are - a short-tempered grouch or a restrained
reasoner.
As difficult as it may be at times it is vital that you realise that
your little one breaks vases, wriggles away at a crucial moment
during the nappy change and cries non-stop when you decide to use
the phone - not because his naughty, but because he has an
overwhelming urge to observe the world around him, and there is no
point in shouting or even smacking him, as he won't understand why
it is important for him to lie still or what all the fuss is about.
To save your sanity, try preventing these situations before they
occur by offering him a toy (keep a few hidden for this purpose) to
distract his attention, while you perform the task as quickly as
possible. Keep that vase and any other harmful items well out of
reach - start thoroughly childproofing your home, as it won't be
long before he starts walking, and no mother would want to place her
child in an unnecessarily hazardous environment. Try to remain
positive through this stage, having a daily scream if that's what it
takes to let off pent up steam. Life does seem to become a little
easier as he progresses, but not all lessons in life need to end in
a 'punch-up'.
