Ectopic Pregnancy
Frequently asked questions about
Ectopic Pregnancies
A well known complication in pregnancy, where the fertilised egg
implants itself and begins to develop outside of the uterus,
normally in the fallopian tubes. Ectopic pregnancies are more likely
to occur in woman using intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUD's),
especially if they are still in position when conception takes
place. It may be difficult to recognise an ectopic pregnancy, but it
is certainly wise to be aware of the symptoms, so that immediate
action may be taken:
- Normal menstruation is replaced by, irregular bleeding, which is
brownish in colour.
- Severe pelvic pain, particularly on the one side of the lower
abdomen.
- Feeling faint, accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
- Once a diagnosis has been made, an emergency abdominal operation
will be necessary, where the affected tube will normally have to be
removed, due to damage.
