HRT refers to the use of hormones during or after menopause to
compensate for the reduction in the hormones, produced by the
ovaries. However, HRT remains a health issue, and all women have
the right to worthy, unbiased information on the topic.
Women using HRT are usually given oestrogen in tablet form,
which they take for three weeks out of every four week cycle, or
for the full four weeks, depending on the severity of her
symptoms. There are also other forms available such as pessaries,
implants, creams and transdermal applications which consist of
adhesive skin patches.
The majority of users are also given progesterone, to counteract
the major side effect of HRT - over-stimulation of the lining of
the uterus, leading to a possible increased risk of developing
cancer. This would obviously only apply in the case of those
women who have not undergone a hysterectomy, or in those where
the uterus is still present.
