IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
(IBS)

Health Forum : Irritable Bowel Syndrome

A common condition in which the large intestine, the colon, fails to function correctly. Other names given to this condition are:

  • Nervous indigestion
  • Mucus Colitis - Spastic colitis
  • Intestinal Neurosis

Symptoms include

  • Abdominal pain and distension
  • Alternating constipation/diarrhoea
  • Pain with bowel movements
  • Excessive production of mucus in the colon
  • Indigestion
  • Flatulence
  • Nausea
  • Anorexia
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

Women suffer more according to statistics, but it is thought that men do not report the symptoms as often.

LIFESTYLE ATTENTION

  • A major change of diet, lifestyle habits, and toilet habits is needed immediately - without this, help is a long-way off.
  • Diet to be modeled on complex carbohydrates, fibres, vegetable proteins, wholefoods, and regular eating patterns. Fats, animal protein, refined foods, sugars, bread (all), de-natured foods, cakes, cookies, pastries, sweets, fast foods, fried foods, frozen foods, overcooked foods, and wrong food combining (see separate chart - Food Combining) are out.
  • Lifestyle Habits such as smoking, alcohol intake, coffee/tea intake, cooldrink intake, late nights, insufficient sleep are all to be challenged and normalised
  • Toilet Habits such as holding back because of habit or laziness, and being unaware of the need to achieve elimination every 18-20 hours after a meal, must be brought into focus. Also in the case of males the habit of sitting-down on the toilet seat to urinate (not standing up) should be trained in. This then motivates increased rectal elimination, compared to previous irregular bowel movements.
