Masturbation
Engaging in self-stimulation is common among preschoolers, where
after discovering certain body parts, repetition is reinforced due
to associated pleasure. On witnessing this, parents often shy away
from the problem, scared of being placed in a difficult situation,
by shaming the child. Approach the matter in a way that suggests
that this kind of behaviour is socially unacceptable, rather than
morally unethical. Explain to your child, (if you haven't done so
already) that these are his 'private parts' and shouldn't be exposed
to the public eye - you may want to start simple discussions that
offer protection against child abuse. If you find your child
masturbating too often, accompanied with sexual language, drawing
pictures that depict sexual organs, shows signs of depression or
starts victimising younger children, it could mean that he has been
exposed to a form of abuse and the appropriate help should be sought
immediately.
