The term 'Menopause' refers to the permanent ending of monthly
periods, marking the end of a woman's reproductive life. This
phase also often embraces the wide range of accompanying
symptoms that occur during this "change of life", and although
it is by no means an illness, it could be a very difficult time
for the woman both physically and psychologically.
Menopause is a physiological event that all women experience,
generally when they reach middle age. And yet, it has always
been something of a mystery, both to women and to their health
care providers. Menopause used to be (and still is), viewed as
the beginning of a steady decline, and dreaded by many a woman.
Today, though, more information is available to women about
menopause and oestrogen deficiency than before - information
that can help women understand what is happening to their bodies
when they reach menopause and what can be done to relive its
discomforts and prevent some of the long-term health problems
that may follow oestrogen loss.
