Fears and Phobias
Fear is something we all suffer from at some point in our lives, and
it is an instinctive way of protecting ourselves from danger. As we
venture into adulthood, things that used to bother us as children,
no longer have any significance, and it was only through experience
that we learned what was harmful and what wasn't.
Children between the ages of five to six years, fear natural
disasters, such as not being able to meet up to her academic
expectations, or rejection from her peers. These common fears seem
to grow with us, reaching their peak in adulthood, when social
acceptance and career performance is at it's highest.
Phobias, on the other hand, are not what some may believe, and
differ quite considerably to fears. A phobia is an intense,
irrational fear of a certain object or situation, that affects the
everyday life of the sufferer. Children are not likely to suffer
with a phobia, however, an unresolved fear in childhood, may hound
the adult in the form of a phobia. These anxiety attacks should be
treated as early in childhood as possible, and with the wide range
of books available it is simple enough to deal with many problems
through reading books containing related information.
