From the desk of Richard
Penfounde, your Naturally Healthy Lifestyle specialist. SWINGING into summer conjures up visions of fun-loving outdoor
living coupled with ever-increasing romantic days (and nights).
However swings have a tendency to include roundabouts, and one such
for summer lovers is an increase in the environmental pollen count
which can play havoc with any dancing by candlelight.
Suffers of hayfever and other allergies brought on by early summer
days are forever searching for something that can help.
I offer you nature's deposits from the bees-knees, commonly referred
to as bee pollen (originally Latin for pine flavour - but today used
for all plants).
Pollen is a balancer and is so complex that scientists have not yet
been able to deliver a precise analysis of it.
Twenty-one amino acids have been isolated, with leucine, arginine
and lycine as the major quantative players. The B-vitamins feature
well and so does linoleic acid (the Omega 6 essential fatty acid)
and linolenic acid (the Omega 3 essential fatty acid).
Minerals so far isolated include calcium, magnesium, potassium,
iron, copper, manganese, silicon, sulphur, sodium, titanium, zinc,
iodine, boron, molybdenum, choline, plus rutin if the pollen
originated from buckwheat flowers. Not a bad pedigree by any
scientific measurement.
BACK to hayfever. The study of pollen, known as palynology, has been
majored in Sweden, where today it supports a single palynological
laboratory aimed at bringing pollen within the reach of all of us.
Latest research shows that those showing an allergic reaction to
pollen do not usually exhibit these symptoms when taking pollen
supplements or raw honey containing good quantities of pollen.
A formula worked out by Dr Gordon Latto suggests that sufferers
administer bee pollen weekly for some six weeks before and during
hayfever season to reduce attacks now and then, and again in the
second year to finally desensitise the allergy once and for all.
Finally some encouraging pollen news for prostate and
rheumatism /
arthritic sufferers.
For arthritic conditions six tablets / capsules a day early in the
morning until symptoms subside.
For prostate problems. Professor Heise, of the Urological Clinic of
Magdeburg, has used a 3-year treatment in which one tablet / capsule
is taken three times daily.
Beneficial properties of pollen on record include: dermatological,
menstrual and mental concentration problems, potency, fatigue,
depression, enhancing performance of athletes and sportsmen,
enhancing established antibiotics when the need to take them arises,
reducing toxic input and easing sore throats.
