Pregnancy Discomforts
Constipation
A very troublesome side effect of pregnancy, which is often caused by the weakening of the intestinal muscles. Iron supplements, which are often prescribed during pregnancy, can also be the cause of hard painful stools, which tend to be darker in colour. It is best to try and avoid constipation wherever possible as any undue straining will put pressure on the pelvic floor and can result in piles.
- Increase your water intake, and drink herbal teas instead of normal tea or coffee.
- Supplement your diet with natural iron sources, such as green leafy vegetables, raisins, potatoes and tomatoes.
- Include more roughage in your diet, in the form of wholegrain breads and cereals.
