TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical nerve Stimulation)

This method of pain relief, involves the placing of four electrode pads on your back. These pads discharge an electrical stimulus, and you are in control of the amount of electrical input needed. The pulses that are given off during this method, block out the pain messages being sent to your brain and help in stimulating your body to release it's own natural painkillers (endorphins). The availability of this method of pain relief is still fairly limited, however availability does increase with demand.

Advantages:

  • You have full control of the Tens machine, and can adjust it accordingly.
  • Unlike some other methods, it can be removed if you don't like the sensation, or find that it is offering no relief whatsoever.
  • These machines are also hired out for relief of backache during pregnancy.

Disadvantages:

  • May be a nuisance once labour has progressed.
  • There is no known effect on the baby, but until this has been proven one should not just assume that it is totally safe.
