Thrush (Candida)

Thrush affects about one in three pregnant women, a common pregnancy ailment, that is caused by the growth of fungus. Why pregnant women are susceptible to this problem, isn't quite known, but it is thought to be due to the changes in the pH of the vagina.
Thrush starts with the vagina feeling itchy and tender and there may be a burning sensation upon urinating. There may be a thick, white vaginal discharge, and the vagina tends to become swollen, red and painful. Although it is not necessarily a sexually transmitted disease, it can be passed on during intercourse, with your partner experiencing redness and pain at the tip of his penis and under his foreskin. Therefore is it wise for both of you to seek treatment, even if only the woman is affected.

  • Vaginal thrush responds very well to natural treatments. Try eliminating all sugars, refined starches, tea, coffee and alcohol from your diet, and aim for a healthier option, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Applying nappy rash cream around the vulva may ease the discomfort.
  • Shower rather than bath, and wash with an unscented soap.
  • Live, natural yoghurt or frequent salt washes are also recommended.
