Practitioners, advise that one follow a simple set of guidelines and
safety precautions, when embarking on the use of essential oils in
the home:
- Do always consult with specific safety data before using new
oils.
- Do take note of any contra-indications when using particular
oils.
- Do buy only high quality oils, from specialist suppliers.
- Do a patch test before using a new oil, if you have sensitive
skin.
- Do get immediate medical help if any essential oil gets into
the eyes.
- Do avoid using peppermint oil if suffering with high blood
pressure.
- Do use essential oils in half the usual stated amount during
pregnancy.
- Do use essential oils with care in babies and children.
- Don't use sage oil during pregnancy.
- Don't swallow any oils, unless under the supervision of a
qualified aromatherapist.
- Don't combine with homeopathic treatment, unless under the
guidance of a qualified person.
- Don't apply pure, undiluted oils to the skin - except when
using lavender.
Babies and Children:
Infants are far more sensitive than adults to the properties of
essential oils, therefore it is vital that oils only be used in a
well diluted form, and one should be particularly careful not to
subject young children to any oils that may pe possible irritants.
