Sleep Enhancers

Routine:
In the early days, a sleep routine may not seem necessary as your baby will probably drift off to sleep during or following his feed, however it is never too early to introduce a pattern into your baby's life, by making evenings a quiet time that offers the baby plenty of time to unwind from his daily stimulation. A warm bath will do wonders in soothing your baby, followed by a gentle massage and a tender cuddle. The breast or bottle can be left for last, where mother and child can spend peaceful quality time before baby falls asleep.

Gentle movement:
While in the womb, babies were constantly rocked into a state of serene bliss, and calming your baby with gentle movement, such as rocking and patting may just offer your child the comfort he is seeking. Placing your baby in her carry-cot on-top of a tumble-drier may also be an effective method. Due to the heat however, she should not be left there too long, and the appliance should not take preference over her mother's arms - babies need the comfort of parental love.

Pleasant sound:
Any baby left in isolation, is bound to feel insecure, especially when she became accustomed to the sounds of your heartbeat, stomach rumblings and voice while in the uterus. Try placing her in a room that doesn't block off all noise completely or placing a radio or musical mobile nearby.

Snug sleeping place:
Babies love to be swaddled in blankets as it offers them the 'tight' security that was present in the womb. For this reason you will probably find that your baby seems more content in a smaller sleeping space than her cot. Placing her in a pram will also have the added benefit of being rocked to sleep, or you may like to try leaving her in her carrycot for the first few weeks - which also means that there will be no need for disturbance if your decide to go out.

Sufficient day-time rest:
Many mothers', in an attempt to hopefully gain a more peaceful nights rest, try and minimise their child's day-time resting periods, by keeping them constantly active throughout the day. This does more harm than good - babies and children need to have frequent rests and naps during the course of a day, and by practicing this method, you will probably find that your child has more difficulty in sleeping due to over-tiredness.
