Thumb Sucking
Sucking offers comfort to both babies and children alike, and what
was previously frowned upon as unacceptable, is now part of many a
child's normal development. Don't become overly concerned at your
'thumb-sucker', it is only a passing phase, that will diminish with
time - I mean have you ever seen adults that still regularly suck
their thumbs? Most children will stop sucking their thumbs as
toddlers, while others will feel the need for additional comfort for
a couple more months or even years, and those children who have
given-up the habit, may return to it in times of need, such as
moving house, starting school, or any drastic change in routine for
that matter.Be patient and supportive when trying to coax a child
into stopping the 'thumb-sucking episode', remembering never to
ridicule her if she fails to live up to your wishes. Minimize her
time spent sucking her thumb, by offering her additional activities,
which should help in keeping her mind off the need for emotional
support. Be sure to praise her for all her efforts, and fully
support her when she has the occasional downfall.
