Vacuum Delivery
Vacuum extraction, is an alternative to forceps, with the reasons
for the procedure being very similar. During this procedure however,
a metal or plastic suction cup is fitted to the baby's head, as
opposed to the use of forceps. A form of anaesthesia will be
administered, with the mother lying on her back, and feet raised in
stirrups. The doctor will then fit the cup to the baby's head and
guide the baby out from the birth canal.
Following the birth, the baby may have a slightly raised area on his
head where the suction cup was applied but this will soon disappear.
